Whenever I have conversations about leadership in business I generally start out with one question, “Are you managing your business or leading in your business?” It’s a simple question, yet folks pause and think about it for a minute. The answers I’ve heard vary from either one, to both, to sometimes a little of both.. The thing is, the answer you give will determine your future success.
Leadership is lifting others to a purposeful place within themselves that they never knew existed. Leaders inspire and motivate. They turn vision into fruition. Managers however, manage in the now. They enforce policy and programs to get people to do what needs to be done. While leaders create the programs and inspire people to WANT to do the things needed to be done.
So which one are you? Are you a manager or leader? Which one do you aspire to be? There is no wrong answer. Both serve a purpose. However, to reach your fullest potential, to achieve the successes you want and desire, you must become a leader. There’s no two ways about it. You must have leadership skills.

But here’s the thing…
Being a leader isn’t always easy. It really isn’t. It takes experience, resolve and a certain type of fearlessness. It can be both challenging and lonely as a leader. If someone tells you different, they are lying. Run away from them. FAST!
To gain experience as a leader you need to get out in the real world and take chances. You’re not going to gain experience from a book. Books can give you insight, guidance and encouragement but there is no substitute for real life situations. You need to engage with people. Learn how to be decisive and flexible in your decision making. You need to see failure as an opportunity to grow and learn how to bounce back from mistakes. Becoming a great leader takes time. Patience is key. There will be ups and downs. It’s a real life roller coaster ride being a leader. Just stay on your path and the rewards will come.
